IAB advertising spend figures - more detail

Here are the IAB spend figures for H1 2008 broken down in a little more detail - you can also get more information at the IAB site (an excellent resource for all sorts of stuff).

Total spend = £1,683 million (an increase of £348 million year on year)

Paid for search = £981 million

    Banners / embedded ads = £278 million

    Recruitment classifieds = £195 million

    Other classifieds = £167 million

Other stuff (sponsorships, email ads, interruptive etc) = £62 million

This is good growth year on year, interestingly though the whole online advertising market was worth £853 million in Q1 2008 and fell to £829 million in Q2 2008 - this is the first quarterly fall in online advertising spend since 2002 (the market fell a little Q by Q in 2001 when they started the measurement, but not much) - if this trend continued at the same rate then the total online ad spend for H2 2008 would be approximately £1,500 million. The IAB themselves are predicting a total for 2008 of £3,200 - £3,300 million, so are anticipating a slight downturn / leveling off for H2 this year - not surprising given the current economic madness!

Out of interest the IAB were only able to categorise 37% of the total spend by sector, meaning that my presumptions in this previous post were right.
