    Usage = functionality x connection speed 2.0

    I've been hugely busy this week, but did find time to read my previous post about working out what people will use their various devices for and thought it didn't quite make sense and needed some stuff adding.

    Firstly, in terms of results, here's a more detailed explanation...

    Internet phone = 1 point (1 functionality point x 1 connection speed point)
    pda = 2 (2 x 1)
    blackberry = 4 (2 x 2)
    laptop via 3G = 10* (5 x 2, our vodafone card usually connects at about 300K)
    desktop via broadband = 15 (5 x 3)

    * for some reason in the previous post I thought this scored 6, though on reflection it's obviously 10.

    In terms of the table at the bottom of the previous post and how that translates into what people do online then you can kind of use the following scale...

    1 point (internet phones) = short emails and text sites (you can't send long emails as it's too fiddly and image heavy sites won't look good on the screen)

    2 - 8 points (PDAs and blackberrys) = all of the above + long emails (you can send longer emails because of the qwerty keypad, but probably won't download documents like presentations etc)

    9 - 12 points (laptops via 3G) = all of the above + downloading documents and full internet (you can pretty much do everything, but probably won't download music or films because of the connection)

    13 - 15 points (desktop, or laptop, via broadband = all of the above + multi-media downloads (you've got no restrictions on what you're doing here, you've all the functionality you need and a fast download speed, so you're likely to do everything)

    I'm not sure these points bands fully work, but hopefully you get the drift. I've also slightly confused myself, apologies if you're also confused. I feel I put this to bed now though!

    I was delighted to read your information about connectivity. Selling the concept of an on line (totally web hosted) recruitment software can be tricky as a great deal of education prior to the sale is required (the part I love!) but I have been saved many a time in meetings by giving a live demo of our very comprehensive system through 3G. Would like to hear more. Keep up the gerat blog! (By the way I am a mature (of age) lady to whom this technology was alien until a few years ago and now I wouldn't dream of using anything else.
